Welcome to Nightbooks
Nightbooks is your accountant, at your fingertips, 24/7. It connects to your bank, keeps a full double-entry ledger, prepares your GST, and gives you an AI accountant you can ask anything — while you stay in control of what gets approved.
The big pieces
Bank feeds bring transactions in automatically, through Akahu’s secure open-banking connection or by uploading statement files.
Reconcile codes each transaction to the right account. The AI suggests an account, contact and GST treatment with its reasoning — you approve, override, or skip.
Sales handles the invoices you send: draft, approve, email, share a payment link, and track when they are viewed and paid.
The Inbox handles the bills you receive: forward supplier emails or drop in PDFs and the AI extracts them into draft bills for review.
GST assembles your return box by box against the IRD GST101 form, with drill-down into every number.
Reports (Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, Trial Balance) and the Year-end pack are built live from your ledger.
The AI accountant (⌘J from anywhere) reads your actual books and answers real questions with your real numbers.
How it all connects
Everything flows from reconciling. Bank transactions arrive via feeds, you approve their coding in Reconcile, and journals are posted to the ledger. Reports, GST and the dashboard all read live from that ledger — so when your reconcile queue is empty, every number in Nightbooks is current.
Where to start
Follow the onboarding wizard: business details, GST registration, and your starting path (Start fresh or Import from Xero).
Connect a bank account under Bank feeds — most banks provide up to 24 months of history on first connection.
Work through the Reconcile queue. The first session teaches the AI your patterns; it gets faster from there.
Open the dashboard and reports to see your position — then ask the AI accountant anything you are unsure about.
Reconciling little and often is the single habit that keeps everything else accurate. A few minutes a day beats a monthly marathon.
