What the AI accountant can (and can’t) do

1 min readUpdated 16 Aug 2026

The AI accountant (⌘J from anywhere, or the sparkle button) can read your actual books: reports, GST position, ledger detail, sales, banking and organisation settings. Ask it real questions and it answers with your real numbers — not generic advice.

Great at

  • Explaining your numbers — “why is profit down this quarter?”, “what’s driving the GST bill?” — with the actual transactions behind the answer.

  • Finding things — “who owes me money?”, “what did I spend on software last year?”, “show me payments to that supplier”.

  • Explaining reports, GST returns and health check findings in plain language.

  • Walking you through how to do something in Nightbooks — it searches this help centre and answers from it.

  • Sanity-checking — “does anything look wrong in my books?” pairs well with the automated health check.

Its hard limits

  • Read-only — it never posts, edits, approves or files anything. Every change to your books goes through you.

  • Scoped to the current organisation — it sees the books you are looking at, nothing else.

  • Not a registered tax agent — it is a capable guide grounded in NZ practice, but for edge-case tax positions or big structural decisions, confirm with a human professional.

How it uses your data

The AI reads your organisation’s data to answer your questions, in the moment, for you. Its answers show which figures they drew on, so you can verify anything important against the reports directly.
