Connecting your bank to Airbooks
Bank feeds bring your transactions into Airbooks automatically, so your books stay reconciled without statement exports. This page explains exactly what access we request, how we use it, and how you stay in control.
How we handle your financial data is described in our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
Why connect a bank account?
Without a bank feed, keeping books current means downloading statements and importing them by hand. With a feed, transactions flow into Airbooks automatically — roughly every hour — and are matched against your invoices, bills, and chart of accounts. Your reconciliation, GST position, and reports stay up to date with far less work.
What we access
Transactions
The date, amount, description, and reference of transactions on the accounts you choose to share, so your books reconcile automatically.
Account details and balances
Account names, account numbers, and current balances, so we can match each connected account to your chart of accounts and verify your books against the bank.
Up to 24 months of history
When you first connect, we import up to 24 months of past transactions so your books start complete. After that we fetch updates regularly (about hourly) until you disconnect.
Access is ongoing from the moment you connect until you disconnect — you choose exactly which accounts to share during the connection flow, and you can change your mind at any time.
Read-only: what we can never do
- Move money or make payments from your accounts
- Change anything in your bank accounts
- See or store your bank login details — you sign in to your bank inside Akahu’s secure flow, never in Airbooks
- Share your bank data with anyone else — it is used only to run your books in Airbooks
How the connection works
Airbooks partners with Akahu, New Zealand's open finance platform, to connect your financial accounts. Akahu provides secure account connectivity for many of New Zealand's most trusted financial apps and services, and works with all major NZ banks.
- 1From Bank Feeds in Airbooks, choose Connect bank feed. You'll be taken to Akahu's secure connection flow.
- 2Sign in to your bank inside Akahu's flow and tick the accounts you want to share. Your bank credentials stay with Akahu and your bank — Airbooks never sees them.
- 3You're returned to Airbooks, where each shared account is matched to your chart of accounts and transactions begin flowing in.
You stay in control
Disconnect in Airbooks
Remove a single account or disconnect all bank feeds at any time from the Bank Feeds screen. Transactions you never imported into your books are deleted; your completed accounting records are kept.
Manage access at my.akahu.nz
Your bank connections are held by Akahu, so you can also review and revoke Airbooks’ access directly at my.akahu.nz — independently of Airbooks.
Delete your data
When you revoke access or delete your Airbooks account, we stop collecting bank data and delete Akahu-sourced data that is no longer reasonably required, in line with the NZ Privacy Act 2020.
Security and privacy
How we collect, use, retain, and delete your financial data is described in full in our Privacy Policy (see the “Financial account and bank feed data” section) and our Terms of Service.
You'll need to be signed in to Airbooks to connect an account.
